DR. G. CAMPBELL MORGAN'S RESIGNATION

The following letter was read at a church meeting held at the close of Morning Service on Sunday, 25th July, 1943.

TO THE CHURCH OF GOD AT WESTMINSTER.
MY DEAR PEOPLE,

have to place in your hands my resignation, to take effect at the end of August.

t is not an easy thing for me to do. Whether the story be apocyphal or no, I cannot tell, but it is said that Queen Marydecalred that when she was gone, if her heart was examined, Calais would be found written upon it. Borrowing that figure of speech, I feel sure that if such a thing were possible in my case, the word found there would be Westminster.

here are two periods of service, one of thirteen years, and now one of nearly eleven years. Necessarily memories are active. I am thinking of the group who first invited me, and they are all passed on. I am thinking of the strenuous and glorious years of that first period, which I had to give up in the midst of the War: and I am remembering the facts of these nearly eleven years in which it has been my joy to serve you. Today, however, I am compelled to decide that I am not able to go on, conscious as I am of increasing weakness, and that preaching has become a burden in anticipationand in excercise; and so I must lay that burden down. There are those who still say they will miss me, and i very much hope it is so, and believe it is. To all such I would say, I shall certainly miss you.

n John Wesley's monument in the Abbey the words are found, "God buries His workmen, but carries on his work." Westminster will go on. There have been hours in which I have been somewhat anxious about its future. I am no longer so, for in my colleague, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, we have been led by God to a man whose whole ministry is strictly Biblical, and who is himself loyal to the fundamentals of our Faith.

nd so with all confidence, i emply the words of Paul addressed to the Elders in Ephesus, as recorded in Acts XX. 32: "And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them that are sanctified."

With sincere affection,
I am, faithfully yours,
G. CAMPBELL MORGAN

Whilst the church learned with profound regret of Dr. Morgan's desire,it was agreed that in the curcumstances and after so long and arduous a life's work, it would be ungracious to do other than bow to his wishes and accept his resignation.

On the proposal of Dr. Lloyd-Jones, unanimously ratified by the Church, Dr. Campbell Morgan was appointed Minister Emeritus.
